Newry & Mourne M.S. Community Therapy Centre Provides High Dosage Oxygen Therapy (HDOT)

Background

Newry & Mourne M.S. Community Therapy Centre has been providing oxygen therapy to the community for over 20 Years. Nestled away in the middle of Carnbane Industrial Estate on Shepherds Way, Newry in Northern Ireland, UK, they have been giving great benefit to MS sufferers and those with other conditions through the administration of HDOT (also know as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy or HBOT for short).

HDOT which delivers pressurised oxygen to the body by up to 20 times more than the normal air we breathe, is being used by many people as a therapy to help them recover from many injuries and illnesses such as:

- Multiple Sclerosis
- Stroke,
- Cerebral Palsy & Other Neurological Disorders
- Leg Ulcers, Post-operative Healing & MRSA, etc
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia
- Psoriasis & Eczema
- Angina and other heart problems
- Burns

Young and old can benefit from the therapy, which has also been used to speed up the healing of Sports Injuries & Work-related Injuries. The Centre is used regularly by the Armagh, Down and Monaghan county Gaelic sports teams and by other local sports clubs for their injured players, to speed up recovery from injuries.

The MS Community Therapy Centre is a non-profit organisation and was originally opened to cater for the needs of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients, who suffer from the disease (it is an auto-immune disease which attacks the body’s central nervous system). As well as therapy, they offer support and advice to MS patients, but more recently they have provided the use of their Centre for people who are not MS patients for other medical conditions.

They have a culture of ‘not turning anyone away whom we think would benefit from the oxygen therapy’ and so as a result they have many people coming from all over the country to their Centre to avail of the therapy.

Partnership

The First Step Therapy Centre is delighted to have the Newry & Mourne M.S. Community Therapy Centre as a provider partner and is excited at the prospect of having such a revolutionary and beneficial facility right on our doorstep.

Intergrating the First Step Therapy Programme with HDOT brings even greater benefits to the patient through a process called 'synergy' where the two processes combined together give more benefit than if they were carried out separately at different times. We advise that if a patient is having a HDOT session that they come as soon as possible after for the First Step Therapy Programme, ideally directly after the HDOT is finished. This is beacuse the oxygen is still attached to the red blood cells, in blood plasma and in surrounding muscles as well as brain and other organ tissue. Carrying out exercise when the body is in this oxygenated state brings better recovery than when in a lower oxygenated state.
